Established in 2000, the Global Outbreak Alert and Response Network (GOARN) is a worldwide global health security network with its members including technical and scientific institutions, United Nations organizations, regional networks, and relief organizations.

EMPHNET participated in GOARN’s 23rd Steering Committee (SCOM) Meeting which took place between June 20th and 21st, 2018 at the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) headquarters in New York, USA. Members of the meeting discussed an overview of developments in global health security, reviewed recent activities in the GOARN Steering Committee and disease outbreak response operations, and proposed a work plan for GOARN over the next four years.

Meeting discussions highlighted the importance of the steering committee’s engagement in supporting regional and short-term work plans through the network’s resources, outbreak response activities, and its Knowledge Platform.

One of the significant outcomes of the meeting was the development of an action plan for 2018-2019 for each of the GOARN’s regions focused on mapping partners, enhancing their capacity through harmonized training, and promoting partner engagement for multi-agency cooperation. For the Eastern Mediterranean Region, the action plan included activities related to developing case studies, placements/consultancies, and twinning programs.
