Between November 11 and 12, 2019, GHD/EMPHNET and the Sudan Federal Ministry of Health (FMoH) celebrated the graduation of the first cohort for the Public Health Empowerment Program for Nutrition Officers (PHEP- Nutrition). The cohort comprises twenty-eight district-level nutrition officers from three states: Khartoum, Red Sea, and White. It also includes three officers from the National Nutrition Program.
During the ceremony that took place in Khartoum, the graduates presented their projects focusing on nutrition-related challenges in their respective districts. Projects presented covered surveillance, data management, service coverage, and capacity building. Graduates were evaluated based on their projects, which they completed during fieldwork (2) of the training program.
Launched in 2019, PHEP-Nutrition complements national efforts and builds on the integrated approach that the FMoH is applying: the integration between nutrition and Expanded Program on Immunization (EPI) at service delivery, routine information registry, and communication.
As an in-service program, PHEP-Nutrition comprises three workshops: (1) Integrated Surveillance and Investigation of Cluster of Malnutrition Cases/ Diseases, (2) Advocacy and Communication, (3) Leadership and Management.
PHEP-Nutrition is expected to strengthen the nutrition program through building capacities of nutrition focal points to effectively run integrated surveillance system, efficiently communicate and advocate for nutrition mainstreaming across sectors, and professionally manage local nutrition programs.
