GHD|EMPHNET aims to strengthen applied epidemiology capacities in the Eastern Mediterranean Region (EMR). It achieves this goal by building effective and sustainable public health capacities to enhance surveillance, investigation, and response to national, regional, and global public health threats. Thus, the Workforce Capacity Unit within the Center of Excellence for Applied Epidemiology works by contributing to the workforce development action package that focuses on strengthening field epidemiology to prevent, detect, and respond effectively and rapidly to health threats. Furthermore, it accelerates progress towards a safe and secure world from infectious disease threats.
GHD|EMPHNET collaborates with partners to strengthen the Field Epidemiology Training Program (FETP) by building countries’ capacity in preventing and detecting disease outbreaks. Such activities include enhancing competencies in field epidemiology by improving scientific writing skills, establishing FETPs, technically supporting countries’ FETPs, enhancing surveillance and epidemic investigations in countries, and reinforcing those capacities that can promote the One Health Approach.
The Workforce Capacity Unit Activities
Supporting Scientific Writing
In this activity, GHD|EMPHNET supports writing activities and operational research, and it also provides technical support for FETP residents in the region. This support helps to build the writing capacities of FETP professionals for generating case studies, scientific papers, abstracts, and manuscripts. From another angle, GHD|EMPHNET supports disseminating publications from the EMR. These publications contribute towards generating and sharing knowledge that can benefit stakeholders in making informed decisions that improve health outcomes.
GHD|EMPHNET builds FETP residents and graduates’ capacity in scientific report writing for publication through announcing to the FETP residents/graduates in the region to send their reports to review and select those with the potentiality for publication. A technical advisor from GHD|EMPHNET provides technical support for the FETP residents to build their scientific writing skills. In addition to holding scientific writing workshops and encouraging the publications of scientific papers by residents and graduates, GHD|EMPHNET supports the use of Calibrated Peer Review (CPR) in the region.
Developing Online FETP
GHD|EMPHNET uses e-learning because it is as effective as the traditional training at a lower cost, and it reaches a wider audience. For the Public Health Empowerment Program-Basic Field Epidemiology (PHEP-BFE), 90% of the training management is online, while 10% includes a face-to-face activity. It is a blended learning model where the fieldwork will be supervised online. The aim is to provide all FETP modalities as distance programs.
Supporting FETP Programs in the Region
The technical support that is provided by GHD|EMPHNET includes program reviewing, mini-grants, and field activities. It also involves coordinating related surveillance and epidemiologic activities among the FETPs and assisting the regional collaboration of FETPs in the prevention, detection, and response to epidemics and emerging infections.
