Our collaboration with Somalia began by empowering community response in COVID-19 and later in supporting frontline immunization workers.

Expanding Community's Role in COVID-19 Response

In response to the pandemic, CDC Africa launched a Partnership to Accelerate COVID-19 Testing (PACT) initiative in August 2020. The PACT initiative aims to strengthen capacity to test for COVID-19 across Africa, with emphasis on countries that have only minimal capacity. In Somalia, GHD|EMPHNET in collaboration with African Field Epidemiology Network (AFENET) and CDC Africa, spearheaded the roll out and implementation of a community contact tracing strategy that will specifically support contact tracing efforts and other surveillance functions.

Empowering Immunization Workers Through Supportive Supervision

In Somalia, where the humanitarian crises displaced many of the health workers and compromised health facilities, GHD|EMPHNET is working with the Ministry of Health to empower immunization workers through supportive supervision. First, GHD|EMPHNET worked with the authorities to review and update supervisory checklist. Then, it supported training of provincial and regional supervisors on supportive supervision who later trained the EPI focal points at the district levels on the same topic.
