Field Epidemiology Training Programs

Supported by international and regional partners and hosted at ministries of health, these programs produce skilled epidemiologists who strengthen surveillance systems and response to public health threats.

Since their launch in 1980 by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Field Epidemiology Training Programs (FETPs) in their three modalities: two-year (Advanced), one-year (Intermediate), or three-month (Frontline), have produced skilled epidemiologists who mostly work within ministries of health to strengthen surveillance systems and response to public health threats. These programs run under the learning by doing modality where around 75% of the learning process within these programs occurs in the field. These programs are also adapted to their host country's context.

In partnership with the US CDC, GHD|EMPHNET provides support to ministries of health to establish sustainable FETPs where residents receive training in 10 main competencies. These vary in terms of outputs and learning results and comprise:

  1. Epidemiologic Methods
  2. Biostatistics
  3. Public Health Surveillance
  4. Laboratory and Biosafety
  5. Communication
  6. Computer Technology
  7. Management and Leadership
  8. Prevention Effectiveness
  9. Teaching and Mentoring
  10. Epidemiology of Priority Diseases and Injuries

FETP Modalities in the Eastern Mediterranean

FETPs come in three modalities: the basic (Public Health Empowerment Program[PHEP]), the intermediate, and the advanced. While there is a standard structure and curriculum for all programs, each country customizes the contents for its context. In FETP training, we are incorporating e-training approaches to help reach a wider audience at a lower cost and equally effective way.
