Tunisia FETP

Overview

 

Launched in 2017, the Tunisia Field Epidemiology Training Program (FETP) was established through a partnership between the Ministry of Health, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and EMPHNET. The program is hosted by the National Observatory of New and Emerging Diseases, which plays a central role in coordinating surveillance and outbreak response across Tunisia.

 

The program aims to strengthen Tunisia’s capacity to respond to public health threats through evidence-based decision-making and field-based training. Following a mentored field model, 80% of training time is dedicated to fieldwork, allowing residents to apply epidemiologic principles in real-world settings.

 

Residents are required to complete five core deliverables that demonstrate competencies in surveillance, outbreak investigation, and data analysis.

 

Tunisia’s FETP currently operates in both the Intermediate and Basic modalities, with a focus on:

  • Surveillance system enhancement
  • Outbreak investigation and response
  • Data collection, management, and reporting
  • Field mentoring and capacity building

 

Key Achievements

 

  • Outbreak Investigations: 33 conducted, including investigations of Hepatitis A, Typhoid Fever, Rabies, and Bluetongue Disease
  • COVID-19 Response:
    • Supported national data collection and management
    • Developed standard operating procedures (SOPs)
    • Strengthened surveillance system and infection prevention and control (IPC)
    • Enhanced points of entry management and case handling
  • Publications: 1 scientific manuscript published
  • Conference Participation:
    • Participated in the 10th TEPHINET Global Scientific Conference and other regional scientific events
