Application Status: Now Open  Application Deadline: June 21st, 2015 Notification of Acceptance: August 16th, 2015 What is GIBACHT? The Global-Partnership-Initiated-Biosecurity-Academia for Controlling Health Threats (GIBACHT) is an educational program established and supported by the German Federal Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The training program focusses on threats and risks conferred by biological agents and bioweapons and their successful prevention and control. The programme is offered and responsibly conducted by the Robert Koch Institute, Berlin, Germany, the Bernhard Nocht Institute for Tropical Medicine, Hamburg, Germany, the Swiss Tropical and Public Health Institute, Basel, Switzerland and the African Field Epidemiology Network, AFENET. Program Objectives: - To provide basic understanding and training in control of infectious diseases and the management of biohazards, - To intensify and sustain international co-operation in the fields of biosafety, biosecurity and the prevention and management of epidemics, - To strengthen national and local centres for infectious disease epidemiology and management, biosafety and biosecurity. What Will Applicants Gain From the Program? • Comprehensive knowledge of infectious agents and transmission, including treatment and prevention, • Sampling and safe handling of biological specimens and potentially hazardous materials, • Utilization of adequate epidemiological tools, • Basic modelling of infectious disease outbreak scenarios, • Surveillance and contact tracing, • Containment measures, including personal security and community protection, • Knowledge of international health regulations, • Communication management under disaster or extreme conditions. Program Structure Three on-campus tutorials of one-week duration will be held in Hamburg and Berlin, Germany, and Kampala, Uganda. The courses will be accompanied and supplemented by structured e-learning modules covering related and relevant topics. - The obligatory e-learning modules will be made accessible for a first group of participants in September 2015 and prepare them for the following one-week courses; - Introductory course in January 2016 in Hamburg, Germany; - Real-time simulation of biological incidents in April 2016 in Berlin, Germany; - Case study development module (November 2016 in Kampala, Uganda). - The programme budget covers flight costs up to 1000 €, visa and accommodation costs including allowances for daily meals according to local German regulations;  no daily allowances (per diems) will be paid. Tuition fees will not be demanded. Admission Requirements: - Work experience of at least 2 years in Public Health institutions - Health personnel, preferably engaged in infectious diseases and a degree or proficiency in: ·Public Health, ·Medicine, ·Epidemiology, ·Microbiology, ·Biology, ·Equivalent life science disciplines - An endorsement document of the current employer confirming a minimum of a one-year contract endurance following completion of the programme is required. - Advanced proficiency in English is indispensable for all participants. - Internet access is required for the e-learning modules. Successful Completion of the Program Entails: - Successful completion of all GIBACHT e-learning modules - Presence and active participation in all three face-to-face workshops - Fulfilment of pertinent, distance-based deliverables in a group How to Apply In order to apply for participation in the program, go to  www.gibacht.org  and send the following: - A CV,- A letter of motivation (maximum of 300 words)- An endorsement document of the current employer- All other accredited documents confirming your eligibility as outlined above.
