Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health is Seeking Applicants for Seeking Applications for Junior and Senior Lown Scholars in 2016-2017
February 23, 2016

Application Submission Closes-March 1, 2016 The Lown Scholars Program is now seeking applications for the 2016-2017 Junior and Senior Lown Scholars. The Lown Scholars Program was established in honor of Dr. Bernard Lown, a world-renowned cardiologist and activist, whose career has advanced public health globally. The Program is designed to create an international cadre of talented health professionals who will use public health tools and strategies to prevent cardiovascular diseases and promote cardiovascular health in developing countries, as defined by the United Nations. The program is designed to train scholars who live and work in a developing country. Therefore, the only eligibility criterion is to have a full-time position in a developing country. Priority will be given to applications from applicants with: • A track record of research, teaching or policy work in cardiovascular disease prevention and with a focused and clear proposal. • Applicants from centers where current Lown Scholars work. • Applicants who have identified a current or prospective Lown Senior Scholars as a mentor. • Applicants who have parallel funding through other sources including other fellowships at Harvard. For a list of these fellowships please see here. The program has also identified three topical areas of priority for 2016. These are: • Cardiovascular health in urban poor. • Universal primary healthcare and health inequities. • Psychosocial stress and cardiovascular disease. Junior Scholars will be invited to come to Boston and take two courses during the summer session (July 7 to 29th) and stay for a one-week workshop after the end of the term (through August 5) to develop a research proposal with their mentors and Distinguished Scholars. They can submit a proposal for seed funding (up to $50,000) or for a smaller project (up to $10,000). After the workshop the Junior Scholars will submit their research proposals to the Lown Scholars Program to be evaluated for funding. Scholars who are awarded seed funding will be invited to return to the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health in the summer of 2017 to present their progress and provide feedback to the next cohort of Scholars. Current Lown Scholars can apply for the courses and workshop or only for the workshop, and are eligible to submit applications for seed funding or smaller projects. Senior Scholars will also be invited to come to Boston for two weeks (last of week of July and first week of August) to further develop their research/policy/training plans, to collaborate with HSPH faculty and to provide feedback and guidance to Junior Scholars. Senior Scholars are often selected from full-rank professors, research center directors and others with extensive experience in cardiovascular disease prevention (see the link above for the list of current Senior Scholars). The program will cover full costs of the trip to Boston (airfare, lodging, living costs) as well as the tuition for summer courses. To see how you can apply click here. Note Applications should be sent to: • Nancy Long Sieber at nlong@hsph.harvard.edu • Goodarz Danaei at gdanaei@hsph.harvard.edu The deadline for application is 5pm Eastern Time on March 1, 2016
