Registration Now Open for EMPHNET's Training Workshop "Rapid Response to Public Health Emergencies: Tools and Techniques in Challenging Conditions"
June 30, 2016

As data and information systems behave differently during the acute phase of emergencies, different approaches are needed to suit the challenging conditions that complicate those emergencies. Therefore, identifying challenges and obstacles in collecting and managing information during emergencies is crucial for assuring effective response and operation. To assure timely and effective response, public health and emergency responders should be familiar with tools and techniques that are available for use to support effective planning and action. In an effort to strengthen information management of national rapid response teams, the Eastern Mediterranean Public Health Network (EMPHNET) will conduct a five-day training workshop titled “Rapid Response to Public Health Emergencies: Tools and Techniques in Challenging Conditions.” Scheduled to be held in Amman, Jordan between August 21 and 25, 2016, this training presents examples of special public health tools and techniques that can be used to manage data and use information in developing emergency response plans. The training will equip participants with the required knowledge and skills necessary for managing information when responding to public health emergencies. The workshop will be facilitated by regional and international experts. Workshop Objectives This workshop aims to strengthen the capacity of national rapid response teams to effectively and efficiently respond to public health emergencies by using suitable public health tools and techniques for enhancing information management. Specifically, the workshop designed to achieve the following objectives: • introduce the principles of disaster management and the concept of rapid response • demonstrate the roles of the Emergency Rapid Response Team in conducting rapid need assessment and developing response plans • and equip rapid response team members with necessary knowledge and skills by introducing essential public health tools and techniques recommended for collecting, analyzing, interpreting, managing and disseminating data, during the acute phase of emergencies. This workshop focuses on building skills and filling some gaps in knowledge about the challenges facing the public health information systems during emergency. The workshop will cover topics like epidemiological methods, data collection, analysis and reporting. It will focus on how to plan for and conduct rapid assessments, including health needs assessment, during humanitarian emergencies and how to develop/maintain surveillance systems in such situations. Other soft skills will be introduced, including team work, communication skills, understanding the types of emergencies and the standards for response. Acceptance Criteria To be accepted, candidates must meet the following criteria: • hold an advanced university degree in public health, medicine, epidemiology or other related fields, with 3-5 years of experience in responding to or managing public health emergencies • have current or previous involvement in emergency preparedness and response activities at a regional or national level • can commit and travel to other countries in the region or within the country on short notice • have received prior training in emergency management, or rapid response to disease outbreak • be skilled in data collection, data management, data analysis and interpretation, and reporting • and have an intermediate level of English language proficiency, as English is the medium for this workshop.
