GHD|EMPHNET Disease Control and Prevention Internship Opportunity
February 18, 2021

GHD|EMPHNET Disease Control and Prevention Internship Opportunity

Evaluating the Impact of Enhanced Laboratory-Based Surveillance of Animal and Human Brucellosis in Jordan.

Opportunity

The project intends to incorporate surveillance and laboratory testing that will assist in estimating and characterizing the true incidence of brucellosis in humans and animals. It also aims to identify risk factors driving transmission of brucellosis between animals and from animals to humans, and to characterize and map the circulating Brucella species. Confirmatory testing and molecular-based methods will be established at human and animal diagnostic laboratories to align laboratory and surveillance practices with the World Health Organization (WHO) and the World Organization for Animal Health (OIE) recommendations for the identification and confirmation of human and animal brucellosis.

The project’s objective is to measure the impact of active laboratory-based surveillance on the understanding of brucellosis in three endemic areas (East Amman, Karak, and Al-Mafraq) of Jordan, and to determine the true burden and major risk factors of brucellosis in humans and animals in the selected governorates. It also aims to describe the geographic distribution of the circulating Brucella sub-types that can be derived from animal and human clinical samples, and to classify the geographic distribution of animal and human brucellosis cases in Jordan, including the distribution of different Brucella spp.

The is an excellent opportunity for interns to gain skills and get technical knowledge that would be beneficial for their future careers, such as public health and infectious disease surveillance, epidemiology of brucellosis and the burden of the disease, and Brucella data collection and analysis.

During this internship, the interns would be responsible for the following tasks: following up with task owner, field data collection, data entry and analysis, and learning about lab specimen’s management and testing.

Minimum Education Requirements

  • This opportunity is open to graduate or undergraduate  student of  Public Health or any other medical or scientific field. We also accept applications from fresh graduates.

Other Relevant Details

  • This is a virtual opportunity.
  • The project can begin as early as March 10 pending interest.
  • This is an unpaid position.

How to Apply:

Send a resume and a cover letter to Ms. Dana Shalabi: internships@emphnet.net.

Interested applicants should send their application before February 18.
