Voices from the Field 2021 Writing Contest for COVID-19 Response 
June 20, 2021

 

We are inviting Field Epidemiology Training Program (FETP) residents, graduates, and public health professionals, to join us in sharing with the world the great contribution and impact they have made in our region, highlighting   their monumental work in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

 

So, if you have been involved in your country’s COVID-19 response activities in the Eastern Mediterranean Region (EMR), send us your story. Entries will be promoted on our networking platforms and in a special supplement for more people to learn about the work you engage in.

 

We are looking for entries that express the challenges faced, lessons learned, or achievements you made during your work in the field while responding to the COVID-19 pandemic. We welcome stories that shed light on the humanitarian side of your work whether during outbreak investigations, rapid response activities, health awareness campaigns, research, or any other public health endeavor your country is involved in. So, start writing while ensuring that your submission fits the following criteria.

 

    1. A 300 to 400-word narrative.
    2. Written using the font Times New Roman, size 12, with 1.5 line spacing.
    3. It should include a title and a by-line.
    4. Written in first person and from your perspective.
    5. Describes your personal experience in the field during the COVID-19 pandemic.
    6. Written in the language of your choice (Arabic, English, Urdu, French, or any other)
    7. With each entry include a photo of you and a short bio including your name, your current position, and your full contact information. Note: this won’t be considered part of the word-count.
    8. With each entry, please add a 30-second video of you speaking about your experience specified in the entry. This could be a selfie taken via mobile.

           

Eligibility

  1. The contest is open to FETP residents, graduates, and other public health professionals from the EMR only.
  2. Contestants can submit up to two entries, the third entry will automatically not be considered.
  3. All submissions should be sent as word documents.
  4. All submissions should include a photo of you and a short bio including your name, FETP Status if applicable, or current position, along with your full contact information. NOTE:  this won’t be considered part of the word-count.
  5. With the entry add a 30 second video of yourself (can be taken using your mobile) and should be about the experience specified in the entry.
  6. All entries should be submitted to the email: dshalabi@globalhealthdev.org with the subject of the email being “Voices from the Field Submission.
  7. PLEASE NOTE: your writing should be original and about your personal experience, any copied submissions, or any submissions containing any form of plagiarism will not be considered.

 

JUDGING CRITERIA

  • The entries will be evaluated by a committee from the GHD/EMPHNET team.
  • They will be judged in terms of content originality, organization, coherence, and narrative value and relevance to COVID-19 response. Contestants will not be evaluated on their language abilities.
  • They will be judged in terms of authenticity.
  • The committee will be announcing the five winners on July 11, 2021, by notifying winners via email, and making a public announcement on all our communication channels.

 

ADDITIONAL NOTES ON CONTENT

  • Content that is plagiarized or not original will be disqualified.
  • All entries will be published as stories in our communication channels as a series.

 

ANNOOUNCEMENT OF RESULTS

Winners will be announced on our Social Media channels and notified via email.

 

Prizes

EMPHNET will be awarding prizes for the best five entries.

 

DEADLINE FOR SUBMISSION

We accept entries until June 20, 2021, 11:59 pm Jordan Local Time (UTC +3).

 

TIMELINE

  • Submission is open from May 2 to June 20, 2021
  • Winners will be announced on July 11, 2021.

 

HOW TO APPLY

  • Please send your submission via email to dshalabi@globalhealthdev.org, and in the subject: “Voices from the Field”. Please include in the email message a photo of yourself, your full name, your FETP status if applicable, or your current position, and your full contact information including Name, email, phone number, and address.
  • Upon submission, you will receive a confirmation message by email.

 

NOTE

Upon submission, all entries are the sole property of EMPHNET. Therefore, EMPHNET reserves the right to publish entries as it sees fit and make any necessary linguistic and stylistic edits. However, credit will remain for the contestant.
