Awareness sessions with influential community members (2023)
March 11, 2024
Yemen Empowers Communities to Boost Vaccine Demand

The ongoing humanitarian crisis in Yemen has fueled the rapid spread of diseases, which have included vaccine preventable diseases (VPDs) like measles and the Circulating vaccine-derived poliovirus type 2 (cVDPV2). The crisis has also destabilized the national health system, weakening all its building blocks, including the workforce, which is not at its full capacity to respond to growing and emerging threats.

In an initiative led by the Ministry of Public Health and Population, with support from EMPHNET, communities have been mobilized to support the national immunization workforce. This is a collaboration that started in 2017 under the project Polio Village Volunteers (PVVs) and helped expand community engagement toward controlling the spread of communicable diseases, mainly polio and other VPDs by strengthening surveillance of acute flaccid paralysis (AFP). In 2023 and 2024, this collaboration was scaled up to further strengthen VPDs surveillance and improving immunization coverage in hot zones in the country. Specifically, PVVs have been engaged in community awareness raising.

In coordination with PVVs, the Ministry and EMPHNET are strengthening the role of community influences and religious leaders in enhancing immunization demand through awareness raising. At this point and with the help of PVVs, awareness meetings are being conducted with potential informants: community influencers, including religious leaders, traditional midwives, schoolteachers, and traditional healers. The purpose of the sessions is to raise community awareness on the importance of vaccination in preventing VPDs and improving   public acceptance and demand for immunization.

PVVs was an initiative launched in Yemen to help involve the community in AFP surveillance. Back in 207, EMPHNET trained PVV from all parts of the country, expanding community engagement toward strengthening surveillance. PVVs contributed to an increase in the Non-Polio AFP rate and the adequacy rate in districts where they have been trained. In 2023, a huge number of volunteers were engaged in these activities, and they were able to report on cases that might have been otherwise missed by traditional surveillance. This table shows further details.
