EMPHNET Calls for Urgent Health and Humanitarian Interventions to Save Lives and Alleviate the Impact of Escalating Violence in El Fasher, North Darfur

EMPHNET strongly condemns the escalating violence in El Fasher, North Darfur, Sudan, including the devastating attacks on healthcare workers and facilities, and calls for urgent health and humanitarian interventions to save lives and mitigate the impact of the conflict. Such acts threaten the safety of civilians and hinder access to lifesaving health services, placing thousands, particularly women, children, and the elderly at immediate risk.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), hundreds of patients and their companions were killed in a recent attack at the Saudi Maternity Hospital in El Fasher, one of the few partially functioning health facilities in the area. Several health workers, including doctors, nurses, and pharmacists, have also been abducted or injured in these violent incidents.

The humanitarian situation in El Fasher continues to deteriorate at an alarming pace. Ongoing conflict, limited humanitarian access, and severe shortages of food, clean water, and medical supplies have intensified the suffering of civilians. Tens of thousands have been displaced, seeking refuge in rural areas and nearby towns, further straining already overburdened shelters and health facilities. Meanwhile, At the same time, cholera and other diseases are spreading, malnutrition is worsening due to food shortages and disruptions in essential food supplies, and disease surveillance and response activities have been severely disrupted by the deteriorating security situation.

The crisis in El Fasher highlights the urgent need for coordinated regional and global action to protect human life and strengthen health system resilience. EMPHNET remains steadfast in its commitment to supporting health initiatives in the region, actively providing technical guidance, advocating for the protection of health services, and strengthening the capacity of local health systems to ensure that essential care continues for populations affected by the crisis. Immediate and collective action is critical to prevent further loss of life and to uphold the principles of humanitarian care in conflict settings.
