EMPHNET Supports Launch of Health Forecasting Alliance and MENA Regional Network in Istanbul

EMPHNET supported regional and global public health partners in Istanbul for the launch of the Health Forecasting Alliance (HFA) and its MENA regional network, marking an important step toward strengthening forecasting, outbreak analytics, and data-driven approaches to public health preparedness and response.

 

Held from September 7–10, 2026, the Global and MENA Regional Launch and Inaugural Workshop brought together public health leaders, technical experts, and partners from the Eastern Mediterranean Region (EMR) and beyond to establish a shared vision for the HFA and translate it into practical regional and global areas of work.

 

EMPHNET contributed to the MENA regional launch alongside representatives from the US CDC MENA Regional Office, Vital Wave, UC San Diego, and other regional and global partners. Participants examined real-world outbreak and forecasting use cases, drawing on experiences from East Africa and Latin America to identify shared needs, technical priorities, and lessons relevant to the MENA region and globally.

 

A key focus was also translating these discussions into action. Participants defined MENA and global technical workstreams, identified shared priorities and dependencies, and developed roadmaps with specific objectives, roles, and milestones. Discussions also addressed the HFA’s operating model, its role within the broader health forecasting ecosystem, and considerations for sustainable resource mobilization.

 

The MENA regional network will provide a platform for advancing regional priorities, connecting technical expertise, and supporting the development and application of forecasting approaches relevant to public health decision-making. Through its engagement in the Alliance, EMPHNET will continue to facilitate collaboration among public health institutions, technical partners, and experts across the EMR.

 

The Istanbul convening concluded with the formal launch of the global HFA, establishing a foundation for continued collaboration and implementation of the agreed workstreams.
