Bangladesh

EMPHNET extended its collaboration beyond the Eastern Mediterranean Region, supporting countries like Bangladesh in strengthening capacities aligned with International Health Regulations and the Global Health Security Agenda.

Field Epidemiology

In Bangladesh, various indicators make the country vulnerable to different zoonotic diseases. To address this threat to the country's public health and economy, EMPHNET is working with partners to build epidemiological capacities to respond to outbreaks of potentially dangerous zoonotic pathogens. In 2019, we worked with the Chittagong Veterinary and Animal Sciences University, and the Department of Livestock Services (DLS) to establish the Field Epidemiology Training Program for Veterinarians (FETP-V) in Bangladesh.

 

A year after intensive preparation, the Bangladesh FETPV was officially launched in August 2020 as a program aiming to strengthen the capability of the veterinary workforce in the areas of disease surveillance, outbreak investigation, risk analysis, and networking with FETPs. Based on the One Health approach, the Bangladesh FETP-V will enable a veterinarian to “think and act like an epidemiologist.” Building on these efforts, we extended our support to country partners and stakeholders by establishing a one-year Intermediate FETP to support the cohort 7 of the two-year advanced FETP. We also supported relevant activities in health promotion messaging, behavior change communication, and relevant training.

 

Bangladesh also participates in EMPHNET’s regional FETP network activities, including scientific writing workshops and case study development sessions.

One Health

EMPHNET is continuing to adapt the one health approach to more countries to respond to new challenges that are best addressed by collaboration among all sectors of health, building on the organization's successful relevant experience in the EMR and beyond. In Bangladesh, we are worked with the DLS to launch anthrax surveillance in endemic areas of the country.

 

Both parties worked on using a software that can be integrated into Bangladesh Animal Health Intelligence System. Alongside the Institute of Epidemiology, Disease Control, and Research (IEDCR) and the DLS, we are working to strengthen coordination and collaboration between three field epidemiology training programs (Advanced FETP, Intermediate FETP, and FETPV) with a focus on creating synergies in training, joint outbreak investigations, professional development, and field activities.

Emergency Preparedness and Response

Bangladesh is among the countries participating in EMPHNET’s regional Rapid Response Team (RRT) training initiative, which enhances national capacities for early detection, investigation, and management of public health emergencies.
