Bangladesh FETP

Overview

EMPHNET supported the establishment of the Veterinary Field Epidemiology Training Program (FETPV) in Bangladesh. This two-year program, launched in partnership with the Department of Livestock Services (DLS) and the Chattogram Veterinary and Animal Sciences University (CVASU), aims to strengthen the country’s veterinary workforce in outbreak response and zoonotic disease surveillance.

FETPV promotes the One Health approach by addressing the interconnected risks between human, animal, and environmental health. Residents are simultaneously enrolled in a career-track master’s program at CVASU, combining academic training with field-based experience. This integrated model builds national capacity to prevent, detect, and respond to zoonotic and emerging infectious diseases.

In 2022, the Bangladesh Intermediate FETP was launched as a 12-month in-service training implemented by the Institute of Epidemiology, Disease Control & Research (IEDCR) with support from EMPHNET and the US CDC. The program trains government physicians in applied epidemiology, outbreak investigation, surveillance, data analysis, and leadership. It combines in-class sessions, supervised fieldwork, and mentorship. Graduates earn joint certification and play a key role in strengthening Bangladesh’s outbreak response capacity.

Earlier, in 2016, IEDCR established the Basic FETP with support from the US CDC. This three-month in-service training targets government physicians and veterinarians working at the field level. It focuses on building core competencies in disease surveillance, outbreak detection, investigation, data analysis, and reporting, while promoting One Health collaboration between human and animal health sectors. To date, 12 cohorts have graduated from this program, with 233 professionals trained.

In 2024, a Basic FETPV modality was introduced for veterinarians. To date, two cohorts have completed this training, producing 39 graduates who are now contributing to animal health surveillance and One Health initiatives nationwide.

Key Achievements

FETPV graduates have actively engaged in outbreak investigations, surveillance system evaluations, and data-driven decision-making supporting animal health and One Health priorities.
Across all modalities, Bangladesh FETP residents and graduates have participated in 212 outbreak investigations.
FETP residents and graduates have presented their work at over 30 international conferences and published in more than 10 scientific journals.
