EMPHNET and Germany's Robert Koch Institute Sign Memorandum of Understanding

On the sidelines of the World Health Summit (WHS) 2024, The Eastern Mediterranean Public Health Network’s (EMPHNET) Executive Director Dr. Mohannad Al Nsour and Vice President of the Robert Koch Institute in Germany, Prof. Dr. Johanna Hanefeld signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to formalize the organizations’ cooperation in public health. This partnership will focus on operational, educational, and scientific collaboration, leveraging areas of mutual expertise and competence.     

 

Under this MoU, EMPHNET and RKI will work to promote cooperation in public health programs, postgraduate education, continuous professional development, specialized training, and research initiatives. The partnership between EMPHNET and RKI is centered on enhancing public health outcomes through collaborative efforts particularly dedicated to outbreak disease response, epidemic intelligence, public health laboratories, national public health institutes, infection prevention and control, antimicrobial resistance, capacity building, research, among other critical areas.

 

Dr. Al Nsour expressed his optimism regarding the potential that this partnership holds.

 

“We are glad to formalize what has been a promising collaboration between EMPHNET and RKI. Our partnership with RKI will mark an important step towards realizing key joint initiatives of mutual interest and which will yield benefit to national, regional and global responses to public health emergencies. Apart from our individual competences, our connections with strategic global partnerships present further opportunities for us to contribute jointly as well as collectively to global health security.”

 

Dr. Hanefeld also expressed her enthusiasm for the collaboration stating

 

“We are very pleased to announce the signing of a MoU with EMPHNET, marking a significant step towards strengthening the collaboration in public health across the Eastern Mediterranean region. This partnership underscores our shared responsibility a dedication to advancing global health by enhancing post-graduate education and training, emergency response practices and procedures and epidemic intelligence and information systems, among others.”

 

This MoU signifies an important step towards formalizing a collaborative approach to addressing pressing public health challenges by harnessing joint preparedness and response capabilities in service of the Eastern Mediterranean Region and beyond.
