Eastern Mediterranean Field Epidemiology Training Programs Attend Epidemic Intelligence Service Conference

The Eastern Mediterranean Region (EMR) was represented by Pakistan and Iraq participants at the 65th Annual Epidemic Intelligence Service (EIS) Conference, held in Atlanta, Georgia USA between May 2 and 5, 2016.

 

The annual Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) event provided a forum for US EIS officers, mentors, alumni, and public health professionals to showcase their epidemiologic activities in poster and oral presentations. The conference’s International Night also presented an opportunity for officers from countries around the globe to share their work. Unlike previous years, the International presentations- both oral and poster- spread over two days with the first day displaying 16 posters, and the second presenting 6 oral posters. Unprecedentedly, the poster presentations for the International night were arranged using the digital display method. It was noted that Pakistan was the most represented country from the region in both oral and poster presentations. One oral presentation was presented by FELTP graduate Dr. Sajjad Ahmad Khan for his study “Outbreak of Enteric Fever in Union Council (UC) Tarlai District Islamabad.” Pakistan’s FELTP also received acknowledgement for the work they have accomplished, as the program’s director Dr. Tamkeen Ghaffor was the recipient of an award as the best director for this year.

 

Furthermore, Dr. Mumtaz Ali Khan, a resident of the Pakistan Field Epidemiology and Laboratory Training Program (FELTP) and the first place winner of EMPHNET’s 2015 FETP Photo Contest participated in the EIS conference. His participation was sponsored by EMPHNET in recognition of his achievements. Read more about his experience.

 

For the first time, Iraq succeeded in having a poster presentation. The presentation was given by Iraq FETP resident Dr. Riyadh Merwah Ibrahim whose study is titled “Cholera Outbreak in Abugraib District, Baghdad, Iraq, 2015.” Despite the fact that the presenter was unable to attend the conference to present his work in person; He managed to have the poster displayed at the conference site.

 

In addition to the scientific presentations, the conference offered a venue for discussion amongst CDC teams, national and global partners, and FETPs.
