EMPHNET Concludes Workshop to Promote Security of Biological Samples

In keeping with its aims to create opportunities for knowledge sharing and capacity building, EMPHNET held a five-day workshop last week titled “Promoting Cradle to Grave Security of Biological Samples”. The training was hosted in Casablanca, Morocco between February 20 to 24, 2016 and was attended by 20 laboratory personnel and biosecurity officers from Guinea. This event was held as part of the West Africa project EMPHNET is implementing in collaboration with the Biosecurity Engagement Program (BEP). The objective of this project is to promote the security of pathogenic samples “from cradle to grave” and to support secure and sustainable management of Ebola sample collections.

 

The workshop’s sessions were run by facilitators from EMPHNET and BEP, with Technical support from the Moroccan Biosafety Association (MOBSA).

 

Sessions focused on the importance of biorisk management, good laboratory working practices and the standard operational procedures to be adopted in laboratories. Discussions also shed light on hazard and risk communication in the lab and the shipment of infectious substance according to IATA regulations.

 

As part of the workshop’s proceedings, participants conducted a SWOT Analysis (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats) pertaining to practices adopted in their home country Guinea. The results of this analysis highlighted many important topics pertaining to biosafety and biosecurity. The training agenda also included a round table discussion that ended with the development of an action plan for biorisk management.

 

It is worth noting that this is one of the many workshops EMPHNET conducts, as such workshops fall in line with EMPHNET’s aims to secure better public health for different communities around the globe.
