EMPHNET Conducts National Rapid Response Teams Training for Jordan

EMPHNET conducted a National Rapid Response Teams (RRTs) Training in Amman, Jordan between May 29 and June 1, 2016. The training comes in line with the organization’s initiative to strengthen the capacity of rapid disease response, outbreak detection, and RRTs at the national and regional levels. It is the second in a series of country-specific trainings in the region, the first having been conducted in Egypt in April 2016.

 

National Rapid Response Teams Training

The training aimed to prepare health professionals in Jordan to detect and contain outbreaks caused by dangerous biological pathogens in a rapid, secure, and effective manner. Furthermore, its sessions helped contribute to enhancing the skills of participants in ensuring the security of dangerous samples collected during outbreak investigations and in reducing the likelihood of ill-intentioned persons obtaining dangerous pathogens from natural outbreaks. The participants were Jordanian health professionals working in rapid assessment and outbreak response namely, public health doctors, applied epidemiologists, veterinarians, and laboratory specialists. Thirty were in attendance.

 

RRT Training for Jordan

The five-day sessions comprised activities, presentations, and discussions that covered the following topics: RRTs composition, traditional and innovative disease surveillance, EpiCore, steps of outbreak investigation, Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), case findings and contract tracing, line listing, and biosecurity in the field. A team of facilitators from EMPHNET and the Jordanian Ministry of Health conducted the sessions: some of which were offered in Arabic, while others in English.

 

National RRT Training for Jordan

The training was problem-based and interactive, as it revolved around the fictitious scenario of a suspected outbreak of Avian Influenza (H5N1). During the first three days of the training, facilitators and trainees discussed core concepts through daily scenario updates and activities. The concepts included team composition and standards of conduct; field investigation; case management; and field reporting and communication.  On the fourth day of the training, participants were asked to develop a standard operating procedures for rapid response to help them apply the competencies learnt in the training.
