EMPHNET Delegation Follows Up on the Iraq Project for Strengthening Brucellosis Surveillance and Diagnosis

With aims to strengthen brucellosis surveillance, diagnostics, and control in Iraq, a team of experts from EMPHNET met with officials from the Iraq Centers of Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the Central Public Health Laboratory (CPHL) in Baghdad in January.

During these meetings, the delegation observed the divisions and units dedicated to the project and it also evaluated the diagnostic tests used for the project’s purposes. More specifically, the specialist working in the bacteriology lab spoke to the delegation about the diagnostic methods used for brucellosis testing, while also highlighting the methods of follow up and project protocol the lab adopts for samples received from public health labs in Dyala and Babyl provinces.

Furthermore, the ELISA test was done in the Public Health Lab for all positive samples revealed in the Rose Bengal test and the subset of Rose Bengal negative samples, while in the CPHL all positive samples from the ELISA test and subset of ELISA negative samples were set to be verified for Real Time- Polymerase Chain Reaction RT-PCR. During this visit, the lab specialist also approved for the delegation to introduce the Brucella Capt test to diagnose chronic human cases of brucellosis.

In another meetings held in Baghdad-Iraq between January 19 and 20 2015, the delegates discussed the importance of estimating the burden of the disease. They discussed the importance of identifying the type of circulating Brucella species in two Iraqi provinces, previously agreed upon in a steering committee meeting held in Amman, May 2015 (Dyala and Babyl). They also spoke about another two provinces also agreed upon in steering committee meeting held in Iraq last October 2015 (Misan and Al Kout).

Representatives from the four, above mentioned, provinces attended the meeting in addition to the members of steering committee and specialists from the veterinary laboratory and CPHL. The meeting agenda included a presentation from CDC and CPHL, followed by discussions on the obstacles faced when transporting the samples from health facilities to the public health lab and then to the CPHL. Furthermore, a steering committee meeting was held in the presence of the Director of Communicable Diseases Department at the Ministry of Health Dr. Muthanna Ibrahim. The objective of this meeting was to discuss the Brucella project stated above, relevant activities for this project and proposed future plans. The meeting also allowed participants to determine the training dates, and procurement of ELISA kits, BrucellaCapt test and other supplies relevant for project implementation.

Overall, the visit was deemed fruitful, as the visiting delegation observed the commitment of the Iraqi Brucella team to the project and the ability of the team to work hardly even in insufficient circumstances.
