EMPHNET Facilitates Mass Gathering Sessions in MediPIET Module 4 Training

During the Humanitarian Crisis and Mass Gatherings training module implemented July 18-22, 2016 by the Mediterranean Program for Intervention Epidemiology Training (MediPIET) in Amman, Jordan, EMPHNET facilitated the sessions on mass gatherings.

 

The module is part of MediPIET’s two-year training program. It was designed to train participants in ways to deal with complex emergencies which result from man-made crises or natural disasters that can jeopardize the health of entire communities. Participants were fellows of MediPIET’s training program and junior-to-mid-term career public health epidemiologists from the Mediterranean and other regions.

 

The sessions covered topics on epidemiological tools used in times of humanitarian crises. These included rapid risk assessment in complex emergencies; disease surveillance and response; data collection for surveys; and surveillance and response in mass gatherings. A full day was dedicated to visiting the Zaatari refugee camp which was followed by a field exercise on sampling.

 

Mass Gathering Sessions in MediPIET Module 4 Training

For the second year, EMPHNET’s team members facilitated the module’s sessions on mass gatherings. The first session provided an overview of regional and international experiences with mass gatherings and particularly detailed the public health concerns associated with such events. The second session explained strategic risk assessment as a tool that can thoroughly examine potential threats in different mass gatherings. The third session focused on the different types of surveillance systems and efficient response mechanisms to be adopted during mass gathering emergencies. The session also introduced the concept of epidemic intelligence as a process that provides early detection of potential health threats. In the final session, each group of participants were presented with an exercise on risk assessment as well as preparedness and response measures.

 

EMPHNET has experience in public health during mass gatherings as part of its work in health security. EMPHNET implemented the Iraq Mass Gathering Project in collaboration with the Iraq Ministry of Health and other partners in a one-year project lasting from October 2014 to September 2015. Its goal was to reduce public health threats brought about by mass gatherings in Iraq. This was achieved through training public health professionals in the area of surveillance, implementing field study projects, and providing evidence-based recommendations for the Ministry of Health’s policies regarding public health in mass gatherings
