EMPHNET Holds Preparatory Meeting for the Rapid Response Teams Initiative

EMPHNET held a four-day preparatory meeting for the Rapid Response Teams (RRTs) Initiative at the Landmark Hotel in Amman, Jordan between February 22 and 25, 2016. Senior public health officials from Iraq, Qatar, Egypt, Oman, and Jordan participated in the meeting. The event comes ahead of the upcoming RRTs training in Iraq, Egypt, and Jordan, and serves as a means to receive and utilize the feedback of experts on material to be presented during the training.

At the meeting, EMPHNET introduced attendees to several aspects pertaining to the RRT Initiative in Iraq, Egypt and Jordan including purpose and vision, key concepts, curriculum, team dynamics, deployment mechanisms, potential partners, accreditation, and action plan. The EMPHNET team also explored relevant case studies and simulation activities of relevance to RRTs in the aforementioned countries.

As part of its working areas, EMPHNET undertakes rapid response training. The purpose of such initiatives is to train qualified individuals in the Eastern Mediterranean Region (EMR) to conduct rapid, coordinated epidemiological investigations, assessments, and responses to public health emergencies in the region such as humanitarian crises, disease outbreaks, and natural disasters. In  the following months, EMPHNET will utilize the advanced training module to develop the ability of Ministries of Health in Iraq, Egypt, and Jordan in regards to outbreak response. In specific, it will help them assess and respond to outbreaks caused by different hazards-including high-risk pathogens-in a rapid, secure, and effective manner.

Interviews from the Event:

Dr. Faris Lami
Resident Advisor of the Iraq Field Epidemiology Training Program (I-FETP)
Iraqi Ministry of Health

Dr. Lami explains how the Rapid Response Teams (RRTs) Trainings will create robust response on the national, regional, and international levels. He notes that these trainings are part of EMPHNET’s initiative to develop the concept of “Rapid Response” in the region, particularly where field epidemiology training programs (FETPs) are implemented. Dr. Lami adds that these trainings go beyond the traditional, standard approach in that they consider the individual circumstances of the countries where the trainings are planned to be implemented.

Dr. Hayat Khogali
Director of National Epidemiology and Zoonotic Disease Program
Sudanese Federal Ministry of Health

Dr. Khogali states that the region’s experts in epidemiology, surveillance, and outbreak response will join hands in preparing for and implementing the Rapid Response Teams (RRTs) trainings. She notes  that the RRTs trainings will contribute to outbreak response in the region. Dr. Khogali adds that these trainings will be of a practical nature, especially that they will take into consideration of the context of countries in the region.
