EMPHNET, Iraq Ministry of Health Implement Workshop to Support Mentors of Iraq’s Field Epidemiology Training Program

In cooperation with the Iraq Ministry of Health (MoH), EMPHNET implemented a workshop for mentors of the country’s Field Epidemiology Training Program (FETP) in Erbil, Iraq. Held August 20-24, 2016, the workshop was designed to equip mentors, or “field site supervisors,” with the necessary knowledge and skills they need to better manage the field work of FETP residents. This CDC-funded workshop serves to reinforce the integral role of mentors in an FETP, as residents of the program receive 75% of their learning through practical training in the field. To perform their duties in a more efficient manner, an FETP mentor must have a solid understanding of the program’s requirements, the necessary technical knowledge, and an efficient way to support and supervise the residents.  The workshop's participants will serve as field-site supervisors/mentors to the 4th cohort in Iraq. To help develop the skills of the participants, the workshop’s sessions highlighted the roles and responsibilities of mentors; effective strategies for supervising and mentoring; effective time management skills; and the requirements of the FETP. The mentors were also provided with tools that help them support and assess the residents’ performance such as criteria checklists, templates, and evaluation guidelines.  Experts from EMPHNET and the Iraq FETP facilitated the workshop’s sessions.  To read more about the CDC’s FETP, you can access online resources available  here.
