EMPHNET, Jordan MoH and CDC Present Results of Cross-sectional Poliovirus Study

Under the Patronage of Jordan’s Minister of Health, H.E. Dr. Mahmoud Al-Sheyyab, EMPHNET presented the results of a cross-sectional study titled Estimating Population Immunity to Poliovirus in Jordan’s High Risk Areas. These results were presented in a meeting held at Le Royal Hotel in Amman on November 8, 2016, with officials from the Jordan Ministry of Health (MOH), the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the World Health Organizations (WHO) in attendance. The study, conducted in May 2016, was a collaborative effort between MoH, CDC, and EMPHNET. Considering the global health security priorities, maintaining Jordan as Polio Free country requires persistent efforts in securing universal coverage of Polio vaccine. Accordingly, the study was designed to determine the immunity levels against polio and other vaccine preventable diseases among Jordan’s at-risk children. The target group for this study included children aged 6-59 months who are at the highest risk of vaccine preventable diseases: polio, measles and rubella. The study sample included 479 children from high-risk areas plus 276 from Syrian refugee camps. The sample was selected randomly from high-risk areas (HRAs) identified by MoH. The HRAS included areas densely populated by refugees, Jordanian border areas with Syria and Iraq, areas with dense nomadic populations, hard-to-reach areas, and areas where coverage was less than 90% in previous vaccination campaigns, as well as the Zaatari and Azraq Syrian refugee camps. The vigilance that Jordan MoH displayed in locating and vaccinating high risk populations has been successful in maintaining high levels of vaccination coverage. This fact has maintained high population immunity and averted polio outbreaks despite the influx of Syrian refugees into the country. The use of IPV in the routine immunization program and the availability of this immunization schedule free of charge for all children in Jordan including Syrian refugees and any other nationality have also contributed to the high immunity levels against polio viruses. The results showed that the sero-prevalence among children in high- risk areas and refugee camps was 98 percent and 100 percent respectively for the three types of polio virus (Types 1, 2, and 3). EMPHNET’s collaboration in this study falls in line with its commitment to the advancement of public health practice and the fostering of a research culture. It always strives to increase the involvement of public health professionals in operational research studies and investigations that can bring about improvements in the health status of communities. EMPHNET works to build capacities to improve the research process, health service provision, monitoring and evaluation, and to increase the data available for effective decision making. This is one of the many research projects conducted by EMPHNET in Jordan and the region.
