EMPHNET Participates in 17th Annual Congress of the Lebanese Society of Infectious Diseases and 4th Annual Congress of FASCMID

EMPHNET participated in the 17th  Annual Congress of the Lebanese Society of Infectious Diseases (LSIDCM) and the 4th  Annual Congress of the Federation of the Arab Societies of Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases (FASCMID).

 

The event was held in Beirut, Lebanon between February,  18 and 20, 2016, by LSIDCM and FASCMID. Organized under the theme “Time to Wake Up!” the congress’ objective was to raise antimicrobial awareness, to provide an opportunity to learn about state-of-the-art issues and novelties in the field of infectious diseases and clinical microbiology, and to create links between colleagues in Lebanon and other countries in the Arab World.

 

EMPHNET’s participation comes in line with the organization’s mission to strengthen public health in the Eastern Mediterranean region by collaborating with similar associations and organizations in the field. EMPHNET’s participation in the congress can particularly help the organization improve antimicrobial resistance in Jordan and raise awareness about ways to combat this major public health concern.

 

The two-day congress included two courses, one on infection control and another on antimicrobial stewardship. The event also included a public lecture which focused on antimicrobial resistance in Lebanon from the food chain, followed by oral presentations on emergent infectious diseases such as: MERS-CoV, Influenza and Zika, MRSA, Invasive Fungal Infections, HCV, Chronic Viral Hepatitis, and Candidemia/ Invasive Candidiasis. Furthermore, a separate session was devoted to HIV treatment and prevention.

 

At the conclusion of the congress, the following actions were proposed to help combat antibiotic resistance in the region: prevent infections; track and improve antibiotic prescription/ stewardship, and develop new drugs and diagnostic tests. Recommendations also included the need to resolve information gaps by adopting an assessment tool that can evaluate the status and capacities of the region in terms of antimicrobial resistance.
