2017 Annual EIS Conference Sees Contributions from Eastern Mediterranean Region

The Field Epidemiology Training Programs (FETPs) of Afghanistan, Jordan, and Pakistan were represented at the 2017 FETP International Nights of the 66th Annual Epidemic Intelligence Service (EIS) Conference held in Atlanta, Georgia, USA on the evenings of April 25-26, 2017.

Co-sponsored by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the Training Programs in Epidemiology and Public Health Interventions Network (TEPHINET), the FETP International Nights are organized to highlight the work of the programs’ residents and graduates who present their research in oral and poster presentations before a diverse audience of public health experts. The event also offers an opportunity for FETPs to be awarded for the contributions made by their residents and graduates to improving health in their respective countries.

Following a competitive selection process, 10% of the submitted abstracts for this event were accepted. More specifically, six oral and 21 poster abstracts from FETP residents from around the world were selected for the event.

Dr. Mahnaz Hamed from Afghanistan presented her study The Prevalence of Major External Birth Defects at a Hospital in Kabul, Afghanistan, 2016 as an oral abstract presentation in a session moderated by the Director of the CDC’s Center for Global Health Dr. Rebecca Martin and the President and CEO of The Task Force for Global Health Dr. David Ross.

Two poster abstracts were accepted from the Eastern Mediterranean Region. These included from Pakistan Dr. Muhammad Saleem’s study titled Investigation of Foodborne Outbreak in a Wedding Reception in a Village in District Chitral, Pakistan in October 2016 and from Jordan Dr. Mohammad Alrawahnih’s study titled Epidemiology of Animal Bites and Animal Rabies in Jordan, 2015-2016.

Poster sessions were moderated by the Director of the South Africa Field Epidemiology Training Program and TEPHINET Advisory Board Chairman Dr. Carl Reddy, and the Resident Advisor to the Uganda Field Epidemiology Training Program Dr. Bao-ping Zhu. Poster presenters used the iPoster technology to display their posters before the audience on multi-media, touch screens. Their iPosters are available here.

TEPHINET also organized an FETP International Nights Photo Contest. In this contest, the region’s FETPs were among the 84 finalists for the Facebook vote, and their entries were displayed at the event. The finalists were:

• From Afhganistan, Aminullah Shirpoor 3 photos; and Tawfiqulhakim Nazri, 1 photo.

• From Pakistan, Sandeep Kumar 2 photos; Nayyar Jamal 1 photo; Muahhamd Hakim, 2 photos; and Faiza Bashir, 2 photos.

• From Yemen, Khaled Almoayed, 3 photos.
