Egypt’s Ministry of Health and Population Launches the Congenital Rubella Syndrome Sentinel Surveillance

Over the past nine years, Egypt has maintained very high routine immunization coverage for rubella. It also put into effect strong strategies to control and prevent the disease. To further strengthen its efforts in this area, Egypt’s Ministry of Health and Population (MoHP) is now beginning surveillance of Congenital Rubella Syndrome (CRS) at 10 sentinel sites throughout the country.

This is a surveillance program that is implemented in collaboration with GHD| EMPHNET and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Its purpose is to use CRS surveillance data to monitor the impact of the national rubella vaccination strategy as well as the progress towards rubella/CRS elimination, and take necessary corrective measures in due time.

This surveillance is also important because almost half of the cases of CRS are asymptomatic. Early treatment can reduce permanent consequences for the infants and prevent transmission and outbreaks before the disease’s viral shedding.

The program was officially launched in Cairo on October 17, 2017 in an official ceremonial event. Deputy Minister Dr. Amr Kandeel; the Director General of Communicable Diseases Control Dr. Mohamed Genedi; the Expanded Program on Immunization (EPI) Manager Dr. Essam Othman; and GHD| EMPHNET Executive Director Dr. Mohannad Al-Nsour, were in attendance alongside the central EPI team and the representatives of the targeted provinces.

In his remarks during the launch, Dr. Amr Kandeel expressed his appreciation for the fruitful cooperation between the Ministry and GHD| EMPHNET. He thanked GHD| EMPHNET for its support of different priority programs within the Ministry, and he also added that they are looking forward to more collaboration in the future.

From his end, Dr. Al-Nsour said that GHD| EMPHNET is proud of its partnership with the Ministry due to the role that this partnership plays in strengthening the public health sector in Egypt and achieving national public health goals.

At the launching, the EPI team presented an overview of the CRS Surveillance Program in Egypt, which will comprise an identification and reporting of all CRS suspected cases; case investigations; a record of storage and shipment of specimens; laboratory testing and confirmation; final case classification; and return of results and CRS cases’ follow up.
