EMPHNET Participates in 9th Scientific Conference of the School of Medicine at Jordan University of Science and Technology

The Faculty of Medicine of the Jordan University of Science and Technology (JUST) organized its Ninth Scientific Conference in Irbid between October 18 and 19, 2017. Holding the theme JUST to Adjust your Health: Time to Give Back to the Community, the Conference focused on priority health issues for Jordan, namely, primary health care, obesity, smoking, genetic disorders, and zoonotic diseases.

The Conference was organized in partnership with the King Abdullah University Hospital (KAUH) and the Princess Haya Biotechnology Center (PHBC), EMPHNET, the Jordanian Public Health Society, the World Health Organization Regional Office for the Eastern Mediterranean (WHO-EMRO), the World Organization of Family Doctors (WONCA), the Jordanian Society of Family Medicine, and the Jordan Society for Obesity Treatment.

As part of the Conference’s program, speakers from universities, the private sector, and non-governmental organizations in Jordan discussed public health strategies adopted to reduce smoking. They also spoke about the impact of bariatric surgery in treating obesity, the use of genetics to diagnose and treat diseases, and the practices needed to improve primary health in Jordan. These topics were further highlighted in a set of poster presentations.

As part of its participation in the event, EMPHNET organized a roundtable session titled Zoonotic Diseases as the Most Emergent Threat to Global Health Security. During this session, EMPHNET’s speakers presented an overview of zoonotic diseases as public health events of international concern. In their talks, they referred to cases of SARS, MERS-CoV, H5N1, and Ebola and the importance of detection, prevention and response to emerging and re- emerging infectious diseases. From the local setting, they also spoke about Brucellosis as an example of an emergent threat from animals to humans. Panelists also highlighted the importance of International Health Regulations (IHR 2005) as a means for strengthening countries’ capacity in preparedness and response to such threats.

The outcome of this roundtable session was a set of recommendations for decision makers and practitioners. More specifically, the One Health approach was recommended as the best guarantee for better protection against public health events from animal origins. Furthermore, the importance of strong collaboration between animal health and public health sectors was highlighted to ensure the effective implementation of One Health.

During this session, it was also recommended that all available information on brucellosis in human as well as in animals be compiled as soon as possible, and considered for the development of a national multi-sectoral strategy for the control of the disease locally, regionally, and eventually on the global level.
