EMPHNET Participates in Global Meeting on MERS-CoV

The Middle-East respiratory syndrome coronavirus (MERS-CoV) is an emerging infectious disease which the global community has expressed a “heightened sense of concern” towards. Significant risks of further MERS-CoV outbreaks exist and are attributed to insufficient knowledge about the dangers of the virus and inadequate coordination between relevant sectors to control its spread.

To respond to these concerns and to promote the concept of   One Health, the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), the Organization for Animal Health (OIE), and the World Health Organization (WHO) organized a global technical meeting at the WHO headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland. This meeting was held between September 25-27, 2017.

Meeting participants included representatives of ministries of health and agriculture from 33 countries, as well as experts from non-governmental organizations, universities, research institutions, and the private sector. More specifically, Africa, the Eastern Mediterranean Region, East Asia, Europe, the Middle East, and North America were represented at this meeting.

During the meeting’s sessions, participants discussed MERS-CoV diagnostics, focusing on molecular testing and serologic assay. Discussions also highlighted the laboratory capacity building required and the need for improved surveillance within the animal and human health sectors. From another angle, discussions touched upon human-to-human and zoonotic transmission of MERS-CoV, in addition to clinical management and therapeutics for infected humans and animals.

From the Eastern Mediterranean Region, the Saudi Ministry of Health presented the actions the country takes to identify and respond to MERS-CoV within communities and healthcare settings.

Following their discussions, the meeting’s participants agreed that while progress has been made in research and surveillance, significant gaps remain in understanding the virus, including how it circulates in dromedary camels, or how it spills over into the human population. Moreover, they also highlighted the fact no vaccine is currently available, and that patients are only given supportive treatment.

This meeting gave participants an opportunity to become familiar with the latest research done within the animal and human health sectors especially in countries at risk of MERS-CoV regarding the virus transmission, diagnostic methods, camel and human vaccines. Participants also identified relevant challenges and discussed multi-sectoral coordination mechanisms proposed to face these challenges, especially in the areas of preparedness and response, as well as control and prevention. One of the important recommendations was given by the OIE and that is that member countries notify the organization of any occurrence of MERS-CoV in animals.
