EMPHNET Participates in Situational Analysis Workshop on Substance Use in Jordan

The World Health Organization (WHO) office in Jordan, in collaboration with the Jordan Ministry of Health (MoH), is planning to develop a component on substance use within the National Mental Health and Substance Use plan (2018-2021).

 

For this purpose, the WHO Jordan and the Jordan MoH, in collaboration with the National Center for the Rehabilitation of Addicts, conducted a Situational Analysis Workshop on Substance Use in Jordan. Taking place in Amman at the Landmark Hotel on November 9, 2017, the event saw the participation of EMPHNET alongside other leading stakeholders.

 

Through five working groups, EMPHNET along with experts from other organizations analyzed sbustances currently available and consumed by certain communities. They also looked at the influence of media and national plans for the treatment of substance abuse within the healthcare sector. After a series of interactive group discussions and presentations, participants drafted a report on the situation of substance use. In this report they made recommendations to conduct follow up workshops geared towards improving this analysis. These workshops will be conducted in order to finalize an evidence-based component on substance use which will be included in the National Mental Health and Substance Use Plan.

 

EMPHNET is a part of Mental Health and Psychosocial Support (MHPSS) working group in Jordan. Within this group it works with other governmental, non-governmental, and civil society entities for the improvement of the Mental Health status of different groups of people, particularly marginalized communities in Jordan.

 

Participation in the workshop is significant to EMPHNET especially in the area of identifying the gaps in MHPSS support, with a specific focus on substance abuse for different target populations.
