GHD/EMPHNET Concludes Training Needs Analysis Workshop for EPI Staff from the Region

GHD| EMPHNET concluded a three-day training Needs Analysis Workshop for EPI Staff. The workshop was held in Amman, Jordan between February 26 and 28, 2017. In total, 20 EPI managers, EPI training and supervision officers, VPD surveillance officers, and EPI focal persons from, Egypt, Jordan, Morocco, Sudan, and Tunisia attended the workshop which was facilitated in three different languages namely; English, Arabic and French. The workshop was a collaborative effort between GHD| EMPHNET, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the World Health Organization (WHO), and the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), and allowed the countries to identify and analyze the training needs of EPI staff members. Its sessions introduced a systematic process to analyze needs, design, develop, implement and evaluate EPI training strategies. Topics included an EPI situational analysis, types of learning gaps, and learning experience maps. Participants provided country specific information and identified priority gaps that were useful for developing and implementing future training strategies aiming at developing performance of EPI workforce. GHD| EMPHNET Public Health Programs Director stated that the workshop provided a valuable opportunity for country representatives to come together and brainstorm the best way forward in training. Alice Pope from the CDC-Global Immunization Division added, “This meeting focused on the big picture outcome. It got people to analyze workforce development on an evidence-base, and it allowed scientists to think of how training can help them advance public health. It responds to the need to get a workforce to perform better, and it looked at training from a more holistic approach.” Dr. Osama Mere from the WHO Regional Office, stated that the workshop helped equip EPI staff with the knowledge and skills needed to improve routine immunization. continued by saying that “human resources are the main pillars for us to improve immunization in general. This event improves the confidence of our EPI staff as they now have the tools they need to implement all necessary actions for EPI.” “I think it’s very important for EPI teams in the region to improve their capacity,” said Dr. Kamal Senousi from UNICEF, “of course when it comes to recruiting experts in the region, we don’t have a problem with that; however, we do have a weakness in procurement, health economics, and financing. These areas are not so familiar to all the EPI teams in the region. I believe that all participants should implement a methodology in which they communicate their needs to us, and then we can respond with the most effective means possible.” The event concluded with country representatives presenting draft training strategies and expressing their expectations from GHD| EMPHNET and partners in terms of future support to address their training needs.
