GHD/EMPHNET Holds Regional FETP Directors’ Meeting

Represented by EMPHNET, Global Health Development (GHD) held a meeting for directors of Field Epidemiology Training Programs (FETPs) in the Eastern Mediterranean Region (EMR) February 21-23, 2017, at GHD’s headquarters in Amman, Jordan. The meeting was attended by Dr. Abdulwahed Serouri, Dr. Asma Khattabi, Dr. Ibrahim Iblan, Dr. Kahtan Al Salih, and Dr. Sahar Shourbagy, the FETP directors of Yemen, Morocco, Jordan, Iraq, and Egypt, respectively. Dr. Sultan Abdallah, Head of the Surveillance Department at the Jordanian Ministry of Health and Dr. Mohammed Alamad, FETP graduate from Yemen, were also in attendance. The main objective of the meeting was to discuss the Public Health Empowerment Program on Basic Field Epidemiology (PHEP-BFE), a regional three-month, in-service program where participants learn and practice the fundamental skills of surveillance and outbreak investigation. Customized to address the individual needs of countries in the region, the PHEP-BFE was developed by GHD| EMPHNET to support health systems in responding to the region’s increasingly complex health challenges. Participants reviewed the curriculum of the PHEP-BFE, along with its planning and steps for implementation. Participants also discussed measures applicable to the ownership and sustainability of the PHEP-BFE by the respective countries. Other relevant issues were also discussed, including the creation of an FETP database for residents and graduates, as well as the production of scientific publications and case studies by residents and graduates. An important outcome of the meeting was a consensus among the participants to adopt the PHEP-BFE curriculum and to adapt relevant training material to suit the individual needs of the countries.
