GHD/EMPHNET Participates in AVoHC External Partners’ Meeting

Represented by EMPHNET, GHD participated in the External Partners’ Meeting of the African Volunteer Health Corps (AVoHC) held by the Africa Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) February 27 - March 1, 2017 at the Hilton Hotel in Nairobi, Kenya. Established by the African Union Commission (AUC)/Africa CDC in collaboration with member states and development partners of the African Union, AVoHC is a project designed to deploy volunteers throughout the continent during disease outbreaks and other health emergencies. During implementation of AVoHC, the AUC/Africa CDC plans to partner with various stakeholders concerned with emergency response in Africa. Therefore, the planning meeting was held for both external and internal partners before the actual implementation of the project. The specific objectives of the meeting were to introduce AVoHC to stakeholders and explore areas of collaboration with them, to identify existing efforts in training emergency response teams on the continent, and to discuss the AVoHC training structure. Participants included representatives from various departments of the AUC; organizations affiliated with the United Nations and the World Health Organization; regional networks of epidemiological training; agencies concerned with emergency response and humanitarian services; academic institutions; and centers for disease prevention and control. On the first day of the meeting, participants learned about the AVoHC project, especially within the context of current efforts in health emergency response in Africa and across the globe. Participants also provided information on emergency response teams training that they are currently conducting. The second day of the meeting explored the AVoHC training structure. In breakout sessions, the meeting’s participants were divided into three groups to discuss different aspects of AVoHC: AVoHC team recruitment, composition, network, team retention, training curriculum development, training mechanisms, pre-deployment preparations and post deployment follow-up. A member representing each group presented the proposed outcomes of the discussion. GHD| EMPHNET’s representative was a member of the second group and was also chosen to give the presentation on behalf of this group. The representative outlined the group’s three proposed tiers of training. The first focused on core skills in public health, logistics, finance and administration, and communications. The second focused on adaptation during field deployment, and the third aimed to address effective leadership skills for managers of a response team. On the last day of the meeting, participants worked on drafting a framework for the AVoHC training curriculum. Afterwards, general discussions addressed how to map existing stakeholders’ resources and employ them within the AVoHC project. Following this meeting, interested stakeholders will commit as partners to start the project implementation in the coming months.
