GHD/EMPHNET Participates in Scientific Symposium on Africa CDC’s Five-Year Strategic Plan

GHD/EMPHNET participated in the Scientific Symposium on the Africa Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) Five-Year Strategic Plan. The symposium was held March 24-25, 2017 at the African Union Commission (AUC) headquarters in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, under the theme Enhancing Africa’s Public Health Response Capacity Through Innovation and Partnerships.

Representatives of ministries of health from member states in the African Union, organizations affiliated with the United Nations, regional and international NGOs, and public health scientists participated in this event.

The goal of the symposium was to officially launch the Africa CDC Five-Year Strategic Plan. The symposium’s specific objectives were to consider the methods needed to implement the plan’s activities, to agree on those that must be achieved in the short run, and to explore public health partnerships in the continent.

At the symposium’s opening, the Africa CDC Five-Year Strategic Plan was presented by the Director of Africa CDC Dr. John Nkengasong who outlined the plan’s main objectives. These included strengthening traditional and innovative disease surveillance, establishing functional and linked clinical and public health laboratory networks, and supporting emergency preparedness and response. Participants then inquired about the plan's major components in the open discussion that followed, with emphasis on areas related to innovation in surveillance and the creation of partnerships.

The event also included eight roundtable sessions where current disease threats in Africa, the continent’s preparedness and response strategy, the role of public and private partnerships, laboratory systems and networks that support disease surveillance, and innovation in public health in Africa were discussed.

By the close of the symposium, participants gave recommendations on the priority activities to be implemented by the Africa CDC in the coming two years. They also proposed approaches to to establish public, private, and philanthropic partnerships; and they recommended practical and innovative approaches that can be adopted to implement the Five-Year Strategic Plan.

The Africa CDC was launched by the African Union Commission in early 2017 to improve public health practice in Africa by preventing public health threats and emergencies, promoting health equality, advocating policy change, and promoting data-driven interventions and programs in line with international standards. It was established to respond to the various public health concerns that affect the African Continent, including increasing rates of population growth and movement; existing endemic and emerging infectious diseases; increasing incidence of non-communicable diseases and injuries; and inadequate public health services.
