GHD/EMPHNET Participates in the Global Meeting of Partners of the Global Outbreak Alert and Response Network (GOARN)

The partners of the Global Outbreak Alert and Response Network (GOARN) held a global meeting on December 6 and 7, 2017 at the International Conference Centre Geneva (CICG) in Switzerland.

 

A delegation from GHD| EMPHNET was present at the meeting. As part of its participation, it took part in a panel discussion titled A Case for a Stronger Regional Presence: WHO Regional Offices and Network Partner Perspectives. In this session, GHD| EMPHNET’s areas of work were highlighted, with a particular focus on its support for Field Epidemiology Training Programs (FETPs) in the region and its regional, national, and sub-regional Rapid Response Teams’ (RRTs) training. Through focusing on these areas, GHD| EMPHNET contributes to strengthening the public health emergency response management at the regional and country levels.

 

Through its participation in this discussion, the delegation from GHD| EMPHNET also recommended strengthening GOARN’s role through improving partnership principles. It also highlighted the importance of strengthening coordination within current efforts, especially considering the regional context where deployment is made very limited due to restrictions of movement on the ground. To contribute to such efforts, GHD| EMPHNET proposed working with partners through regional initiatives and training, covering areas of networking, documentation, and research.

 

Breakout groups discussed GOARN 2.0, an initiative created to advance GOARN’s work by expanding its operational procedures, engaging partners and stakeholders, and evolving their working areas in training, research, rapid response capacity, alert and risk assessment.

 

Also as part of the event, the 22nd GOARN Steering Committee Meeting took place on December 5 and 8, 2017. During this meeting, the committee members discussed updates related to the areas of work, disease commodity packages, and key governance issues. Additionally, discussions covered GOARN strategy for 2018-2020 and the workplan for 2018-2019, whereby global and regional priorities were highlighted.
