GHD/EMPHNET Supports Rapid Response Teams Training in Tunisia

The Tunisia Ministry of Health (MoH) is working towards enhancing emergency preparedness and response in its governorates. Therefore, it is training rapid response teams at the governorate level. To achieve its purpose, the MoH, with support from GHD| EMPHNET, conducted a Rapid Response Teams (RRTs) training between November 6 and 10, 2017. This training was hosted at the Pinthouse Hotel in Tunis.

Over 35 public health physicians, veterinarians, and laboratory officers, coming from the Ministries of Health, Agriculture, Interior, and Defense participated. They represented both governorate and national levels.

The workshop’s opening sessions were chaired by Prof. Nissaf Ben Alaya, the Director General of the National Observatory for Emerging and Re-Emerging Diseases (ONME); Dr. Ezzeddine Mohsni from GHD| EMPHNET; Dr. Yves Souteyrand, the World Health Organization (WHO) Representative in Tunisia; and Ms. Shamaza Abdulla, Deputy Representative of UNICEF Office in Tunisia.

In their opening remarks, session chairs stressed the importance of maintaining the continuous collaboration between national public health emergency preparedness and response stakeholders and their partners. They stated that such partnerships will serve to build capacities in the area of International Health Regulations (IHR 2005) and Global Health Security at national and governorate levels.

Senior officers and experts from the Ministries of Health and Agriculture, the Institute Pasteur of Tunis, the Faculty of Medicine of Sousse, the Mediterranean Program for Intervention Epidemiology Training (MediPIET), and GHD| EMPHNET facilitated the workshop’s sessions.

Within their role, they briefed participants on the IHR 2005, the national public health emergency preparedness and response framework, and the national human and animal health surveillance systems. Facilitators also gave presentations on other pressing topics such as infection control, biosecurity, and the importance of the laboratory component in preparing for and responding to emergency public health events. From their end, participants engaged in in- depth discussions on the functioning mechanisms, procedures, steps, and components of rapid response networks.

Additionally, the workshop included practical learning sessions featuring a simulated scenario of an H5N1 outbreak. Within this exercise, participants explored the various steps of an outbreak investigation conducted by a local multi-disciplinary rapid response team. Participants also sat through sessions on Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), as well as interactive presentations, video demonstrations, and group discussions.
