Jordan Ministry of Health and EMPHNET Launch National Rapid Response Teams Guidelines

The Jordan Ministry of Health (MoH), in collaboration with EMPHNET, launched the National Rapid Response Teams Guidelines. The launching took place in an official ceremony held at the Landmark Hotel in Amman on August 29, 2017.

As the first national and regional reference for Rapid Response Teams (RRTs), the Guidelines address the country’s need to enhance preparedness and response in the event of public health events of international concern (PHEIC). They also meet the pressing need for effective and comprehensive preparedness measures to face the current health emergencies affecting the region.

Dr. Ayoub Sayaydeh, Director of the MoH Primary Healthcare Administration; Dr. Maria Cristina Profili, the World Health Organization (WHO) Representative in Jordan; and Dr. Mohannad Al-Nsour, Executive Director of EMPHNET, presided the event.

Representatives of the Ministries of Health, Agriculture, and Environment, the Royal Medical Services (RMS), the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the private health sector, as well as directors and surveillance officers of governorate and district health directorates were also in attendance.

At the ceremony, Dr. Sayaydeh stated that the Guidelines’ objectives are to ensure coordination amongst those working in outbreak investigation. They will serve to secure immediate response to disease outbreaks and promote comprehensive outbreak investigation.

He further highlighted the significance of these Guidelines in Jordan, especially within the context of lessons learned from previous disease outbreaks that affected the country. From her end, Dr. Profili emphasized the relevance of these Guidelines to national efforts made in the area of disease detection and management.

In his remarks, Dr. Al-Nsour thanked the MoH, the RMS, representatives of national universities and the private sector, as well as the EMPHNET team for preparing the Guidelines, the first to be developed at the regional level. He noted that the Guidelines will also be distributed throughout the region to serve as a reference in the formation of RRTs. He further stressed the importance of sustaining and improving such coordination among the Ministry, the WHO, and all involved organizations specifically in the management of disease threats caused by emerging and re-emerging pathogens.

During the ceremony, a presentation of previous disease outbreaks that affected Jordan was given, with focus on the lessons learned from the management of these public health events. Afterwards, the contents of the Guidelines were presented to the audience.

In a general discussion, attendees gave recommendations for implementing these guidelines in the future. They specifically stated that they be bilingual, while representatives from the Ministry of Agriculture (MoA) suggested that similar guidelines be developed for their line of work.
