Jordan Non-Communicable Disease Alliance Organizes Health Festival in Aqaba

In its first activity since its launch early April, the Jordan Non-Communicable Disease Alliance (JNCDA) organized a one-day Health Festival in Aqaba on April 8, 2017. Held at the Aqaba Chamber of Commerce (ACC) under the patronage of the Chairman of the Aqaba Economic Zone Authority H.E. Mr. Nasser Al Sharida, this public event was a collaborative effort organized by the members of the JNCDA, the ACC, and local non-governmental organizations.

As part of the festival’s activities, health booths offered visitors free tests for blood pressure, blood sugar, BMI, body fat, Carbon Monoxide content in breath, and clinical screening for breast cancer. The festival also included an educational corner dedicated support for breast cancer patients and survivors.

More specifically, blood pressure, blood sugar checks, and body fat checks were performed on 150 persons, out of which 25 were found to be diabetic, 30 hypertensive, and 100 overweight. An early breast cancer detection was carried out for 43 women, out of which 15 cases were referred for further examinations. Vision tests were done for 200 persons, and eye glasses were prescribed to those who needed them, while blood pressure and blood sugar monitors were distributed to the guests.

The breath carbon monoxide test was done on smokers of both cigarettes and shisha, revealing that carbon monoxide levels ranged between 7-26 amongst them. Two cases presented exceedingly high levels of CO whereby one was 37 and the other was 42. Following these results, education sessions were given on the dangers of smoking and the substitutes used to help smokers quit the habit.

Counseling sessions on how to lead healthy lifestyles were also carried out for 100 person , and, in the evening, 100 guests took part in an hour-long healthy walk in the city.

The JNCDA is a national coalition of six non-profit organizations: EMPHNET, the Royal Health Awareness Society, the Jordan Health Alliance, Alwaed Society for Advocacy and Survivorship, the Lina and Green Hands Society, and the Jordan Health Society. The first to be established in Jordan, the JNCDA aims to promote practical solutions for the prevention and management of NCDs in Jordan, the rate of which has been accelerating of late. EMPHNET’s Executive Director Dr. Mohannad Al-Nsour is the current president of the alliance.
