Jordanian Ministry of Health and EMPHNET Launch Asian Tiger Mosquito Control Protocol

The Jordanian Ministry of Health (MoH), in collaboration with EMPHNET, launched the Asian Tiger Mosquito Control Protocol on April 25, 2017 at an event it hosted at the Landmark Hotel in Amman. Present at the launching were the MoH Head of Communicable Disease Directorate Dr. Mohammad Abdallat and Head of the Parasitic and Zoonotic Diseases Department Dr. Khaleel Kinani, alongside representatives of EMPHNET and other public health experts from the governmental, private, and academic entities.

The Asian Tiger Mosquito Control Protocol was launched to reduce the incidence of mosquito-borne diseases and to prevent outbreaks of emerging and re-emerging diseases caused as a result of such transmission. The protocol also helps to minimize discomfort of the mosquito’s bites, as it presents different strategies to control the pest. These strategies include the surveillance of harborages and breeding sites, the inclusion of needed environmental measures to combat the propagation of the mosquito; and the creation of better coordination among all involved parties to control the breeding of this mosquito. Furthermore, the protocol also serves to offer an understanding of the insect’s habits and life cycle, breeding sites, and its physiological characteristics.

At the launching, remarks were given by Dr. Abdallat, Dr. Kinani, EMPHNET’s Deputy Executive Director Dr. Adel Belbaisi, Dr. Ahmad Katbeh Bader from the Faculty of Agriculture at the University of Jordan, and Dr. Zuhair Sami Amr from the Department of Applied Biological Sciences at Jordan University of Science and Technology (JUST). Their discussions focused on raising public awareness and improving coordination between all concerned parties in the matter.

Native to tropical and subtropical regions of Southeast Asia, the Asian Tiger Mosquito is now fairly common in African, European, North and South American, and Middle-Eastern countries. Also known as Aedes albopictus, the Asian Tiger Mosquito is capable of transmitting pathogens and viruses such as the dengue, the Chikungunya, and the West Nile fevers. New evidence shows that the mosquito is also capable of transmitting the Zika virus.

In 2016, the Asian Tiger Mosquito was found in villages in Jordan in the Northern part of the country, particularly in Bani Kinanah, Al-Kurah, and Al-Aghwar ash-Shamaliya. It was also detected in central Jordan in Shuna Janubieah, and Ira and Yarqa in Al-Salt. The mosquito (larvae and adults) were found in water samples collected from cement, plastic, and metal water tanks- places known to be the harborages and breeding sites of the insect.  Sample results from the Laboratory of Parasitic Diseases at the MoH, the University of Jordan, JUST, and Pasteur Institute in Tunisia confirmed the presence of the mosquito in Jordan.
