Sudan Federal Ministry of Health Launches Public Health Empowerment Program - Surveillance for Polio Officers

The Federal Ministry of Health (FMoH) of Sudan, with support from GHD| EMPHNET, is implementing the Public Health Empowerment Program - Surveillance for Polio Officers (PHEP-SPO). This is a three month, in-service program designed to strengthen and expand the capacities of district-level polio officers in the areas of surveillance, outbreak investigation and response, and public health interventions management. The program equips officers with additional skills they need to complement their current roles to support the FMoH’s and state Ministries' of Health (MoHs) efforts in sustaining polio eradication, strengthening routine immunization, and contributing to strengthening the national health system.

 

From July 25 to July 27, 2017, the mentors of the PHEP-SPO participated in a workshop designed to prepare them for guiding and supporting the trainees of the PHEP-SPO during their field work which comprises 75% of the program. Given the practical nature of the training, the role of these mentors is key to ensure the achievement of the programs’ objectives. This training workshop was held in Khartoum Sudan.

 

The PHEP-SPO mentors are Federal Ministry of Health (FMoH) and the States' MoHs's staff members working within the national Expanded Program on Immunization (EPI). These mentors were oriented on the PHEP-SPO content, tools, and principles of mentoring. They were trained in mentorship skills relevant to the PHEP-SPO field assignment, with a focus on their respective roles and responsibilities. They were also introduced to the monitoring and assessment tools used for the PHEP SPO field work.

 

Prior to the mentors’ training, the Ministry also conducted a stakeholders’ meeting in Khartoum on July 24, 2017. Thirty participants from the FMoH EPI, the States’ MoHs, Public Health Institute, the CPD (Continuous Professional Development Center), the Sudan Medical Specialization Board, as well as the national Polio coordinator and representatives of the EPI National Advisory Group took part in the meeting.

 

The meeting facilitated discussions on the current capacity and role of the FMOH and involved stakeholders towards the sustainability of the PHEP-SPO as well as the plan to implement the PHEP-SPO’s first cohort. Furthermore, the monitoring and evaluation plan was introduced to initiate its revision and discussion, thus ensuring that the program is achieving its objectives and that trainees are acquiring the required competencies. Participants also reviewed the arrangements for the implementation of the PHEP SPO, and they discussed how the program can contribute to the retention of the EPI workforce at the district levels.
