Tunisia Field Epidemiology Training Program Conducts Its Second Workshop

With support from GHD| EMPHNET, the Tunisia Field Epidemiology Training Program (T-FETP) conducted its second workshop titled Investigating Epidemics between December 4 and 8, 2017, in Tunis.

 

Members of the T-FETP’s first cohort participated in this workshop. This cohort comprises 15 surveillance unit staff members from central and regional surveillance units.

 

To introduce these members to the stages of investigating an epidemic, the workshop’s sessions focused on the skills needed to perform the field work of an outbreak investigation, to draft case definitions, and to perform descriptive analysis including developing line lists and epidemic curves, as well as obtaining and testing hypotheses from this analysis. In addition, members were also introduced to the epidemiological and biostatistical methods to be applied during the investigation of an epidemic using Epi Info software options. These options included questionnaire creation, data entry, and descriptive and stratified data analysis.

 

This workshop builds on the information its participants gained from T-FETP’s first workshop titled Introduction to Intervention Epidemiology. Held earlier this year, the T-FETP’s first workshop was designed to familiarize members with the basics of public health surveillance, epidemiology and biostatistics, communication, and e-learning methods. The first workshop was followed by a field work period held between October 9 and December 2, 2017. As a follow up to the outcomes of this field work, members presented to their respective mentors the field projects they completed.

 

The T-FETP is a one-year program where members enroll in five modules that focus on surveillance of public health, epidemics investigation, priority diseases, complex emergencies and biosecurity issues, and research methodology. Each module will be followed by a field training, and as a requirement of the program, each participant is expected to complete a research project. The first cohort of this program comprises 14 physicians and one veterinarian working in priority regional surveillance units designated by the MoH.

 

This second workshop will also be followed by eight weeks of field work.
