Tunisia Field Epidemiology Training Program (T-FETP) Conducts Mentors’ Training Workshop

While Tunisia has a relatively strong public health system, several gaps in applied epidemiology capacities remain. The country is still endemic to several pathogens, including the avian influenza, brucellosis, hepatitis, and other vector-borne diseases such as leishmaniasis and West Nile. Therefore, the country’s public health system needs to be strengthened through robust disease surveillance, detection, and response.

 

To meet this need, the country’s Ministry of Public Health, with support from GHD| EMPHNET and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), launched its first Field Epidemiology Training Program (FETP). The objectives of this program are to improve disease surveillance, expand the use of data for decision making, and strengthen detection and response of outbreaks and other adverse health events.

 

T-FETP’s first activity was a training workshop conducted in Tunis for mentors of its first cohort. The workshop was organized by the Observatoire National des Maladies Nouvelles et Emergentes (ONMNE) on behalf of the Tunisia MoH, and it took place between September 11 and 16, 2017. Its primary objective was to prepare the mentors for their role to guide T-FETP members in their field work.

 

This training is significant to the success of the T-FETP because 80% of the program consists of field projects. Through ensuring that its mentors have the skills they need to provide robust mentoring for cohort residents, the T-FETP residents can succeed in their in-service, field requirements and in turn apply the knowledge they have gained to improve their respective units and programs.

 

At the workshop, the mentors practiced basic mentoring skills. They became familiar with the contents of the T-FETP material, assignments and tools, and they also learned about the monitoring and assessment tools used for the fieldwork. Furthermore, the mentors were trained on how to use the Moodle platform to connect regularly with the respective mentees.
