Yemen’s Ministry of Health and Population Graduates First Cohort of the Public Health Empowerment Program – Surveillance for Polio Officers (PHEP-SPO)

The Ministry of Public Health and Population (MOPHP) in Yemen, in collaboration with GHD| EMPHNET, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and the World Health Organization (WHO), implemented the Public Health Empowerment Program – Surveillance for Polio Officers (PHEP-SPO) between July and October 2017.

The PHEP-SPO is an in-service training program designed to strengthen and expand the capacities of governorate-level surveillance officers in the areas of surveillance and outbreak response and management. The program equips officers with the skills they need to complement their current roles within the Ministry and help sustain polio eradication and contribute to strengthening the national health system.

The first cohort’s 18 residents received both didactic and field training. The training covered fundamentals of epidemiology, public health surveillance, outbreak investigation and response, and leadership and management. These subjects were covered in three workshops and two field work periods.

After the last workshop of the program which took place between October 15 and 17, 2017, a ceremony was held on October 19 to celebrate the graduation of the PHEP-SPO's first cohort.

The event was presided by the Director General of Disease Surveillance and Control at the MOPHP Dr. Abdul Hakeem Alkohlani, the Technical Advisors of the PHEP-SPO Dr. Nabeeha Al-Abhar and Dr. Ali Sabri; as well as delegates from the WHO and the GHD| EMPHNET Office in Yemen respectively Dr. Abdel Nasser Rubai and Dr. Ali Midhwahi.

In her opening remarks, Dr. Al-Abhar briefed attendees about the program’s objectives and its significance to enhancing epidemiologic and surveillance capacities within the current context in the country.

From his end, Dr. Sabri reiterated the importance of the PHEP-SPO in equipping graduates with the skills that they need to effectively conduct disease surveillance and thus better serve the national health system in this regard.

Dr. Alkohlani, echoed these sentiments, saying that the PHEP-SPO was one of the best training programs offered to surveillance officers. He added that the success of the program was due to the long-lasting partnership among the Ministry, GHD| EMPHNET, and the WHO.

Furthermore, Dr. Rubai spoke about the partnership between the WHO and the MOPHP in general and specifically in implementing the PHEP-SPO, while Dr. Midhwahi expressed GHD| EMPHNET’s commitment to enhancing public health practice in Yemen through collaborating with the MOPHP, the WHO, and involved parties. He further added that the PHEP-SPO is one of the outcomes of this collaboration.
