Annual Epidemic Intelligence Service (EIS) Conference FETP International Nights Sees Impressive Participation from the Eastern Mediterranean Region

Field Epidemiology Training Programs’ (FETP) residents and graduates from around the world presented their research at the FETP International Nights of the Epidemic Intelligence Service (EIS) Conference held in Atlanta, USA, between April 17-18, 2018. Holding the theme Improving Global Health Security through Field Epidemiology Training, Surveillance, and Outbreak Response, the event provided these residents and graduates with the chance to present their research into surveillance, outbreak investigation, and their contributions to their respective programs. Organized by TEPHINET and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the event also presented the opportunity for networking and knowledge exchange between FETPs, EIS officers, and international experts in the field of public health.

 

The Afghanistan, Iraq, Morocco, and Pakistan FETPs participated in the event’s poster sessions. Dr. Saima Dil with An Outbreak Investigation of Brucellosis at Semen Production Unit, Sahiwal, Pakistan, August 2017; Dr. Ali Jafaar with Assessment of Immunization Session Practices in Primary Healthcare Centers–Wasit Province, Iraq, 2016-17; and Dr. Mahmood Riaz Riaz with Investigation of Measles Outbreak in Nari District, Kunar-Afghanistan-April 2017. For the oral presentations, Dr. Mahnaz Hamed from Afghanistan presented her study Epidemiological Characteristics of Maternal Deaths in Kabul, Afghanistan, 2017; and Dr. Fatima Zahra Ben Fouila from Morocco presented her study Measles vaccine effectiveness among children: Morocco, 2017. Both the oral and poster sessions were moderated by experts from the CDC, TEPHINET, and FETPs across the globe. The abstract submissions were reportedly the highest in the event’s history and hence the selection of abstracts was particularly competitive. On the sidelines of the event, a photo contest was organized to showcase the achievements of residents and graduates in the field. Dr. Muhammad Wasif Malik, Dr. Farman Ali, Dr. Muhammad Hakim, Dr. Khurram Shahzad Akram, Dr. Sandeep Kumar, Dr. Farida Khudaidad, and Dr. Sanam Hussain participated from Pakistan. Dr. Kamal Kadhim participated from Iraq, and Dr. Mahmood Riaz participated from Afghanistan. Dr. Houda Moumnni Abdou and Dr. Hind Majidi participated from Morocco; and Dr. Shaimaa Okasha participated from Egypt.
