EMPHNET and WHO Collaborate to Improve Sexual and Reproductive Health Service Use Among Adolescent Girls and Young Women Who Are Refugees

The SEEK Trial project is an implementation research that studies the effect of increased self-efficacy and knowledge on the improved use of sexual and reproductive health services (SRH) among adolescent girls and young women within refugee communities.

 

The project is implemented in three countries: Jordan, Lebanon, and Turkey, by EMPHNET, the American University of Beirut and Ankara University, respectively. It is funded by the World Health Organization (WHO) Reproductive Health Research (RHR), and Development and Research Training in Human Reproduction (HRP) Departments in Geneva.

 

Guided by the principles of community-based participatory research, this project seeks to develop, translate, and locally adapt a low intensity psychosocial intervention for the target group. The project will also include expanding the target group’s SRH knowledge.

 

Recently, the project’s Principal Investigator from WHO Dr. Loulou Kobeissi visited Jordan between November 13 and 15, 2018. The aim of her visit was to enhance collaboration with EMPHNET, discuss the next phases, and to sustain the achievements of the project.

 

During her visit, Dr. Kobeissi visited primary health care centers in Amman and Zarqa Governorates. The aim of these visits was for her to know more about the level of services and preparedness of these facilities to implement the comprehensive reproductive health services package. She also met with a local committee consisting of Syrian refugee women to witness the women’s willingness and capability of implementing the project’s services.

 

Furthermore, she met with the SEEK Trial research team in Jordan to discuss challenges and opportunities, as well as the GHD/EMPHNET leadership to discuss issues pertaining to the project’s progress.

 

The SEEK Trial project is expected to improve reproductive health care services provided to female refugee populations across in the afore-mentioned countries.
