EMPHNET Hosts Kick-off Meeting for Brucellosis Surveillance Enhancing Project in Jordan

On August 9, 2018, EMPHNET hosted a kick-off meeting in Amman to implement a project titled Evaluating the Impact of Enhanced Laboratory-based Surveillance of Animal and Human Brucellosis in Three areas of Jordan.

 

The meeting was attended by representatives from Defense Threat Reduction Agency/ the Cooperative Biological Engagement Program (DTRA/CBEP), Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Jordan Ministry of Health, Jordan Ministry of Agriculture, Royal Medical Services, and the Princess Haya Biotechnology Center at the Jordan University of Science and Technology.

 

In his opening remarks, Dr. Mohannad Al-Nsour, Executive Director of EMPHNET, expressed his gratitude to gain the first-time opportunity in collaborating with DTRA. He also highlighted EMPHNET’s experience in implementing similar projects using the One Health approach.

 

From his end, Dr. Gavin Braunstein from DTRA stated that he is looking forward to seeing this project implemented in Jordan, given that it is the first in this field.

 

At the meeting, EMPHNET presented the project's objective which is to measure the impact of active laboratory-based surveillance on the understanding of brucellosis in three endemic areas: East Amman, Karak, and Mafraq. Furthermore, CDC presented on brucellosis laboratory diagnostics and advanced technology and genotyping.

 

The project is expected to strengthen Jordan’s capacity to detect and diagnose Brucella in the human and animal population. Furthermore, the involvement of the health and animal sectors in the project, as well as the engagement of laboratories will showcase the implementation of the One Health approach in controlling and preventing Brucellosis in Jordan.
