EMPHNET Participates in the WHO’s Second Investigators Meeting on Sexual and Reproductive Health Research in Emergency Settings

The World Health Organization’s (WHO) Sexual and Reproductive Health Research Department and research stakeholders from Jordan, Lebanon, and Turkey are collaborating to start an implementation research to improve the existing sexual and reproductive health access in humanitarian settings. This planned research targets Syrian adolescent girls and young women refugees aged 15 – 24 years in Jordan, Lebanon, and Turkey. The aim of the research project is to test the self-efficacy, esteem, and knowledge of the targeted group in order to improve sexual and reproductive health services provided to them in a feasible community based, culturally-appropriate psychosocial interventions.

 

A first Technical Advisory meeting was held in the WHO Headquarters in Geneva last August to initiate this implementation research. In continuation of this meeting, a second one was hosted at Ankara University in Turkey between December 20 and 21, 2017. At this meeting, participants discussed the technical challenges anticipated in the implementation of the first two phases of this project and the possibilities to overcome the challenges in each of the involved countries. Along with the delegates from the WHO and participants from Ankara University, American University of Beirut (AUB), and EMPHNET, leading psychologists, policy analysts, and research scholars across the world were present remotely over skype.

 

EMPHNET presented a proposed strategy for community mapping and ways to involve available communities of women and coalitions in Jordan in the project’s implementation. Ankara University focused on experiences learned from ongoing projects with refugee health in a collaborative project with WHO and the Ministry of Health in Turkey. AUB presented its plans to implement the first two phases of the project and discussed relevant logistic matters.

 

Presentations were given via Skype by WHO research experts from Amsterdam, Geneva, and the UK on systemic reviews, psychosocial interventions and theoretical frameworks that can be adapted for the project.

 

As part of the meeting’s agenda, participants visited the Training Health Center operated by the MoH in collaboration with Ankara University for Syrian refugees in Ankara. The team also took a tour of the center and interacted with Syrian doctors and health workers.
