GHD/EMPHNET Participates in Training and Coordination Workshop for Rapid Pathogen Detection and Analysis

To support the establishment of a national laboratory network in Jordan based on the One Health approach, the Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) is conducting a series of training and coordination workshops. These workshops are to enhance collaboration and coordination among human health and animal health institutions in Jordan. Supported by the Defense Threat Reduction Agency (DTRA) of the United States of America, these workshops aim to promote the exchange of diagnostic capabilities and to inform future collaboration among these institutions in areas of surveillance, research, and response to infectious diseases and biothreats.

 

The first of these workshops was held in Amman at the Intercontinental Hotel between July 8 and 11, 2018. The workshop saw participation from the Jordan Ministry of Health, Ministry of Agriculture, the Royal Medical Services, the Royal Scientific Society, the Cell Therapy Center of the University of Jordan, as well as the Genomic Center and Princess Haya Biotechnology Center of the Jordan University for Science and Technology. EMPHNET participated in this workshop alongside these institutions.

 

Each participating institution introduced its line of work. They also engaged in discussions on potential collaboration approaches, as well as the operational, administrative, and logistic protocols needed for such a collaboration. Furthermore, they discussed means of data and information sharing.

 

At the University of Jordan Cell Therapy Center, participants sat through practical sessions on molecular diagnostics and genomics, specifically on laboratory sample preparation and data analysis and presentation. A presentation was given on the fundamental principles and basic techniques of molecular and genomic based approaches for pathogen and infectious disease detection and characterization.

 

One of the significant outcomes of the workshop was the participants’ agreement on creating an association for biosecurity. Comprising all participating institutions and possibly other national stakeholders, this association aims to oversee and monitor the application of the standard operating procedures of the Global Health Security Agenda in Jordan.
