GHD/EMPHNET Participates with WHO and UNICEF in Testing Vaccine Management (EVM) Assessment Tool in Bhutan

In 2016, the World Health Organization (WHO) and the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) relaunched the Effective Vaccine Management (EVM) framework. This is a comprehensive strategy designed for continuous, optimized, and innovative immunization supply chain (ISC) quality management.

As part of this strategy, a new EVM assessment package was developed whereby countries can conduct an in-depth review of their ISC and consequently create a comprehensive improvement plan in line with this review.

This new assessment is performed via an online platform, the EVM 2.0 software, designed to enable countries to self-manage their EVM assessment and other related EVM information. It allows for the assignment, distribution and collection of location questionnaires completed electronically using tablets. Detailed analysis of all data can then be generated at any time. The tool contains a heat map showing the results of the assessment.

Currently, this tool, in its beta version, is being tested across regions. The primary purpose of the in-country beta-testing is to test the software’s performance in the field prior to the official launch of the tool.

Between June 1 and 8, 2017, GHD| EMPHNET participated in the EVM 2.0 Beta-testing workshop conducted in Bhutan as a regional partner with UNICEF and the WHO.

During this workshop, GHD| EMPHNET’s team participated in the facilitation of practical sessions on the usage of the tool, introducing the tool to the participants and engaging them in interactive discussions and quizzes on its features and functions. Afterwards, the GHD| EMPHNET team facilitated visits to four locations in Bhutan where the tool was tested in the field and provided feedback about the functionality of the tool and mobile app, relevance of the questions, and optimization of the questionnaires.

GHD/EMPHNET also facilitated technical sessions on the current situation of vaccine management in Bhutan and Nepal. They also presented and managed discussions about EMPHNET’s experience and lessons from EVM 1.0 and 2.0, during which they shared lessons and knowledge from the Beta Testing of EVM training sessions conducted in Amman – Jordan in April 2018.

Commenting on the significance of this testing, Bhutan Representative Dr. Rudolf Schwenk said” This beta testing is really important for improving supply chain management. This is a very good example of joined UNICEF collaboration with local partners and the international level. Our goals can only be achieved if there is compliance at every link in the chain. We have to give priority to the quality of vaccination to save children from life threatening vaccine preventable diseases. This week it will be essential to finalize the EVM 2 for even more effective vaccine management worldwide.”
